James Whipps lived in Portsmouth, Hampshire, on 3 November 1836. James Whipps, 19, labourer, was convicted of stealing 30lbs. of lead, the property of Henry Byatt, of Shalford. -Prosecutor missed the lead on the 27th, and afterwards found it at Mr. Shave's, ironmonger, at Braintree.- Robert Spice, shop man to Mr. Shave, proved that he bought the lead off the prisoner, who represented at the time that he bought it at Shalford. -In his defence, prisoner now said that he bought it for 3s, from a person at Shalford, but called no witnesses. - Transported for seven years. -The prisoner, on leaving the bar, impudently said— “Thank you sir, I can do that easily.” |
